14 Ways to Be the World’s Worst Web Project Manager
Published by OnlineMarketpoint on April 08, 2010
There are a great number of ways to manage website projects, but regardless of your management style, there are behaviors that you should learn to avoid as much as possible. Steering clear of these pitfalls will not only allow you to get through projects on time and on budget, but will leave a very good impression on your clients, and win you more work in the future.
Let Interruptions Dictate Your Schedule
Too often we allow ourselves to be distracted from what we need to be focusing on right now. Mostly it’s unnecessary to jump on every new email immediately; issues can usually wait until we’re done with the current task.
As a project manager, you’ll most likely be in charge of multiple projects and employees at the same time. It’s important to have a system that allows you to have a lot on your plate and still be on top of things. This could include creating a priority list when you check your email/voicemail messages, or when you’re available for meetings. The key here is to make sure you get done what needs to be done.
Tim Ferriss wrote a great blog post on the topic called The Not-To-Do List: 9 Habits to Stop Now; I highly recommend you check it out.

Goodbye SEO Software, Hello SEO Web Applications
Published by OnlineMarketpoint on March 05, 2010
I’m a little perplexed at the speed in which the SEO industry is adopting new technologies, especially for a constantly evolving industry that’s based on being as nimble as Google.
Having worked in SEO for many years, I’ve used almost every tool under the sun for various elements of research, including site analysis, link analysis, and keyword tracking. The problem with most of these solutions is that they’re still developed with an old-school mentality, where you’re effectively anchoring the software to a single computer. Today I’ll highlight some of the problems this can cause and present some alternative web applications. I’ll be taking up the challenge to make the lives of fellow SEO professionals a little easier, as well as providing clients with greater transparency. I’ll also review several SEO web applications, looking at the positive effect they can have on your campaigns and workflow management.
Here’s how the old process, based on desktop apps, used to work:
-
purchase the software outright and download it
-
install the software on the computers where it will be used
-
perform the SEO-related task
-
export reports and share via email
Any time you wanted to run a ranking report, the software has to complete this task locally.
To be fair, most of these desktop applications automate the process of running and emailing reports; however, they still rely on the computer being switched on to connect to the Internet.

7 Places I Find Blog Topic Ideas
Published by OnlineMarketpoint on February 22, 2010
If you have a blog that you write for regularly, you know how difficult it can be to come up with creative and interesting post ideas. Writer’s block hits me often, especially since I write for several different blogs, mostly on small business, freelance and entrepreneurial topics. It can be challenging to keep the content unique and fresh across all of the sites.
One thing that has been invaluable for me in coming up with post topics is my idea file. It’s a document that I use as a dumping ground for ideas, brainstorms and inspirations. I have several pages of ideas, some better than others, and refer to this almost every day. Sometimes, just looking through the list will get me thinking in a new way that results in a great topic.
But finding fresh topics and frequently updating my idea file is key, otherwise it doesn’t do much to help me. So I have a series of places I go to generate new ideas when my file starts to look a little sparse. I thought I’d share my resources with you, and hopefully it will help you beat writer’s block the next time it hits you.
